1. Definition and Industrial Characteristics

1) Definition of the Sports Industry
All activities to produce an additional value through the production and marketing of
the sports-related products and services.

- The manufacturing or service industry providing goods and services related to the sports
activities.(Kim Chang-kyu, 1997, The development of sports industry in Korea and their tasks,
1st Sports Industry Seminar.)

- The industry providing goods and services regarding the sports activities.(Han Wang-taek,
1996, Introduction to Sports Industry, Taegeun.)

- The industry providing sporting goods and services or manufacturing and marketing sports,
sports facilities, sporting equipments, and sporting goods.(taken from the definition by Mullin,
Kim Chi-jo, 1993, Sports Marketing, Taegeun)

- In principle,<industry> refers to the commercial production of goods and services or
manufacturing and marketing for the market. Therefore, Sports Industry refers to the commercial
production of goods and services related to sports or manufacturing and marketing for the sports
market.(Park Young-ok, 1997, Actual condition of sports industry in Korea, and study of policy
support plan)

2) Characteristics of Sports Industry

Sports industry is a 21C-oriented industry.

- The industry producing an additional value from the physical ability in combination with artistic
sensitivity and technology.

- The industry producing an additional value from the brand or the image.

- Sports industry is related to the entertainment and health industry with the characteristics like
the cultural industry.(Refer to the classification of the cultural industry by UNESCO/ the
classification of the cultural industry by Canadian Government.)

Sports industry facilitates economic growth and has other developing effects.

- Sports industry promotes to economic growth, employment enlargement, development of
tourism resources, and the moral gains such as citizen's psychological and physical health
promotion.

- At the same time, the development of sports industry has positive effect on sports facilities,
sports population, and sports funds.

Lack of policy support.

- Lack of policy support for the sports industry in existing sports policy.

- Imbalance between policy support of the sports industry supporting policy and that of the film,
design and animation industries, and industrial arts.

 
 
2. Classification of Sports Industry

1) Basis for the classification of the sports industry

There are various classifications by Mullin(1983)1), Japanese Society for the Study of Sports
Industry(1990)2), Pitts, Fielding & Miller(1994)3) and Meek(1997)4).

Classifications of sports industry by American researchers

- Mullin : Considering sports activities, athletes themselves as goods, amateur and professional
(team and individual) sports which produce an additonal value are included in sports industry.

- Classification by Pitts, Fielding & Miller : Performances were considered as goods.

- Classification by Meek : Sports entertainment, sports products, and sports support
organizations.(Refer to <Table 1>.)

2) Classification of Sports Industry in Korea

Sports industries in Korea are classified into sporting goods, sports facilities, sports service
(sports marketing, staging and sports information supplying business)(Refer to <Table 2>).

Sporting goods

- Sporting goods production, sporting goods marketing, sporting goods rental, developing and
managing sports products.

Sports Facilities

- Construction and operation of sports facilities, sports tourism, sports program management

Sports Marketing

- Sports events, sports marketing and athletes agents, production and marketing of human resources.

Staging

- Professional/amateur leagues, sports team, stadium management, sports licensing business.

Sports Information Supplying Business

- Sports related publication, sports TV & radio, sports internet, sports character business.
